I'm HOT !

Watch out blokes, this will be TMI for you to handle - one strictly for the girls only...After a surgical hysterectomy and oophorectomy 2 years ago as a cancer prophylactic, I was plunged overnight into instant and acute menopause. I suffered intense symptoms within 6 hours of the surgery and was prescribed HRT by the surgeon. Since this time, I have been asymptomatic and apart from the freedom experienced from an absence of menses, I have not noticed any change to my mood or my lifestyle. Well, that was until I developed a DVT a month ago and because it is a high risk factor for blood clots, my specialist stopped my HRT immediately. And, I'll never be able to take it - or any plant estrogen - again. Since going cold turkey, my menopause symptoms have returned with a vengeance and I am struggling to deal with them. I feel old, I feel useless, I feel out of control .... I feel my body has let me down. I'm only 43 and I did not bank on dealing with this stuff at my age.

Yeah it's not fun, but now I feel a bit whiny and sooky; it's a bit indulgent to throw a "Pity Party for One" when there are bloody squillions of people much so worse off than me... I've just given myself a good kick up the arse and have smile and sense of humour firmly planted back in place :)

(but thanks for the sympathy Sean - I did appreciate it)

I'm curious....do women "have" to take hormone replacements? I never have yet, but do I need to? I trust your knowledge here, Missus!

First of all...huge ass hug. Second...I think the last time I read the word "menses" I was in a sex education class :)

I can't relate to the hot flashes, but I know what it is like to sleep with someone that is always hot. Remember the movie Star Wars? I live with Chewbacca. Yes, my husband is a friggin Wookie with hair every where. There are times that I can't stand it---

Ya know, when I heard of women talking about hot flashes when I was younger, I thought, aww that'll never happen to me, or it won't be as bad as they're talking about. Well now it seems like I'm the only one going through it and it's gotta be worse than what everyone else is going through. HAHAHHHAHAHA Luckily it seems to come and go. I'm in remission at the moment, lol. Hopefully it's because of me walking the dog every morning.

Tina: No, not all women suffer symptoms to the same degree of severity - my mum breezed through menopause, barely raising a sweat at all. And because of the risks (there is lots of research which suggests a link between long term HRT usage and breast/ovarian cancer)many women have mild symptoms, they choose to manage without resorting to HRT. My plan was to use it for a few years until I was at a more natural menopause age, then gradually wean myself off it - didn't quite happen that way. If you are coping without drugs Tina, I would say stay away from them.

Sarah: Thanks for the virtual hug my friend :) I used the quaint term for risk of offending the boys - need not have bothered, I'm sure they didn't read it anyway (with the exception of my supportive mate Sean) Hmmm, hairy blokes - not sure about that one Sarah - why not get him really pissed one night and bring out the hot wax :)

Vamp: It's so good to have you back Ms Vamp ! Glad to hear your exercise regimen is helping with the symptoms - and I bet the dog loves being out with you too :)

Kyles: Thanks for the thoughts and well wishes - I'm not sure which is worse, to gradually slide into menopause or to hit it like a truck - my jury's still out on this one because I'm not sure whether my symptoms are going to be around as long as others, or for a shorter duration - I'll get back to you after my visit to the specialist next week :)

Kim: You've been there and done that then - DVTs are no fun are they ? I'v also been there and done that - been to a naturopath and got me some of that black cohosh, although I'm not allowed to take it or evening primrose (or anything else much) whilst I'm still on warfarin. So, may just have to put up with it for the next 6months - but after that, I'll be up for every lotion, potion and tonic I can get my grubby hands on to try - everything but plant estrogens (which are just as risky for blood clots). Thanks for the thoughts :)

Not having hit this wall yet I have no real advice to give, nor can I make it stop so all can say is that I am thinking very cool and positive thoughts in your direction Missus...

I hate to sound stupid, but what's DVT?
My wife is on HRT and she seems to be thriving on it after having the pluming removed. I'm hoping she keeps on keeping on.

You're not old, just mature! :) I haven't had to go thru any of that shit yet, and I can tell you now that I'm not looking forward to it either.

At the other end of the scale, my 10 year old just got her first period. Thankfully, we were prepared for it and had 'the conversation' quite a while ago. It therefore did not come as a complete shock to her, but she still was NOT impressed!

It just shows that being a woman means different things to different people at different stages of life!

I'd love to tell you to embrace it, and to go out and celebrate, but I have the feeling you may not be in quite the right frame of mind!!

I do hope things improve dramatically, and soon. This is probably obvious, but have you considered looking at any alternative therapies? Take care of yourself xo
